Hobby Paint
Made
in the USA |
NOTE:
All military colors are available in a flat (non gloss) finish.
Our
NELSON Hobby Paint™ is made for us by System Three Resins®,
Inc. in Washington. System Three is the first company to manufacture
full-scale aircraft quality polyurethane paints and a two part epoxy
primer that both can be thinned or reduced with water. Their products
are used extensively in the Industrial, Aerospace, Marine, and Automotive
industries for several years. The same quality paint and primer are
exclusively offered to the hobbyist by NELSON Hobby Specialties The
NELSON Hobby paint and primer are perhaps the safest painting products
available for general purpose use by the hobbyist. Excellent results
are obtained, even in a home workshop environment.
Unlike
typical epoxy paints, NELSON Hobby paints do not turn to a yellowish
color due to sun light. Fuel proof characteristics are excellent. The
paint can easily handle gasoline and nitro glow fuels with over 50%
nitro. It can be applied over polyester fabrics without the need for
inital coats of clear dope or special fabric primer.
We
have been marketing this paint for over 10 years. Our customer base
grows every year. R/C Scale Championship results have included first
place wins in both the expert and team classes at the US Scale Masters
Championhips. Many of the AMA National Scale and Top Gun competitors
have also used our paint. But the bulk of our users are mostly sport
modelers who like the convenience of useing a paint that thins with
water and has no smell and very importantly, safe to use indoors.

NELSON
Hobby Paint™ does not have any noticeable smell, thins
and cleans up with water, dries in 10 minutes, fuel proof, use
a foam rubber brush, and is reasonable in price. Over 170 standard
colors, including film and military, in 1/2 and 1 pint containers.
|
This paint cleans up and is thinned with normal drinking water. The
same organic resins used in solvent-based paints are modified to make
them dispersible in water. A small amount of water-soluble cosolvent
is present to aid in film formation and to speed drying, but a pint
of this paint contains 75% less solvent than a pint of solvent based
paint. Coverage ability is excellent, more so than most paints. The
paint can be used right out of the bottle, however up 15% or more water
should be used to allow for spraying and better brushing applications.

1/4
Scale Tiger Moth built by Jeremy Fursman. Made from a Duncan
Hudson kit. Painted with NELSON Hobby paint using a
brush. The model is a replica of an actual aircraft
in New Zealand. Jeremy has flown this aircraft in four Scale
Masters Championships winning first place two times and also
placing a 5th and 7th. Last win was at the 2003 Championships.
The paint job is holding up fine after four years of competition
flying. |
NELSON Hobby paint products are environmentally safe. This water reducible
paint and epoxy primer is nonflammable, have hardly any odor, minimal
in toxicity, and a VOC level (Volatile Organic Compounds) less than
125 grams/liter. Elimination of toxic solvents and unreacted isocyanates
means the nonprofessional can apply these paints safely. These paints
can also be applied safely indoors. These coatings also comply with
the strictest VOC emissions standards that are in force today and for
standards being proposed in the future.
Water reducible coatings can lower paint costs, since there is no thinner
to purchase. Water is the thinner and you can use as much “thinner”
you want for clean up. Also these coatings are nonflammable and can
be shipped anywhere, anytime, by any method at lowest rates without
any expensive hazard fees.

Hobby Paint.
|
There is no concern about water coming in contact with the paint after
the paint has dried. The paint isn't going to wash off when water comes
in contact with it. Once the water has evaporated, additional water
contact has no effect. This paint as marketed by System Three® Resins
has been used for years on fiberglass boats that are constantly exposed
to salt water, rain, ice, and direct sunlight. Also the paint is marketed
to the home built full scale aircraft market.

80"
Midwest Products Extra 300S painted with NELSON Hobby Paint.
Less than 1 1/2 pints used. Built by Jerry Nelson
|
The paint is an one or two part product. As a one part paint, it can
be used over solid surfaces and for use with low nitro fuel or gasoline.
The Cross Linker additive is added in the amount of 8 drops per ounce.
Use Cross Linker when painting over open fabric covered structures.
The use of the Cross Linker is required when using 10% or higher nitro
glow fuels and when fabric covering is used over open surfaces. Cross
Linker is supplied in containers sufficient for 2 quarts. We highly
recommend the use of Cross Linker regardless of the painting application.
It simply makes the paint tougher and more scratch resistant.
Frank Kagel's 75 pound
45% scale Pitts S2 flown at the Top Gun R/C competiton in Florida. It
powered with a 4-cylinder 3W engine. Radio is a JR. Model covered with
NELSON Lite FAB and painted with NELSON Hobby True Red paint.
Standard military and standard film matching colors colors are supplied
in pint and 1/2 pint plastic bottles with a screw cap. Custom colors
are supplied in only pint container sizes.
NELSON Hobby Epoxy light grey primer is supplied in two plastic containers
when totally mixed together will make one pint. The mixing ratio is
3-1. Primer is intended for use only over solid surfaces of fabric,
plastic, aluminum, steel, or fiberglass.

A professional quality paint job is not a series of short cuts and rushed
procedures. A professional quality paint job, with any kind of paint
system, is quite simple. However, each step in the process has to be
done and finished correctly. There is no way to make professional finish
without any work. It takes time to do it right. However, the NELSON
Hobby paint can produce a very acceptable finish rather quickly, perhaps
with less labor than any other paint system. The quality of the final
paint job is directly related to what’s under the paint and primer,
and the weather and physical conditions that the painting process was
done under.
ADVANTAGES OF NELSON
HOBBY
PAINT
PAINT DOESN’T SMELL
Perhaps most modelers paint in their basement or an attached room to
their home. Typical paint smell is dispersed throughout the house. Often
the modeler doesn't notice the smell or odor, but others in the home
may find paint smell annoying. This paint really doesn't smell at all.
LOW TOXICITY
Many paint users, especially older people, can have serious reactions
to solvent based paints. Since the solvent in the NELSON Hobby paint
is water, there is very little concern of any allergic reactions to
the skin or internal parts of the human body.
GOOD COVERAGE
Paint has a high level of pigment and solids. The 80 inch wingspan Midwest
Products Extra 300S shown in the photo was entirely covered with polyester
fabric, except for the fiberglass parts. Less than 1 1/2 pints paint
was used to paint the entire aircraft. We have received several reports
of modelers painting a 1/4 scale Cub with less than 2 pints of our paint.
LOWER WEIGHT
Because the coverage is so good and the pigment levels are high, there
is actually less paint put onto the model.
MODERATE COST
NELSON Hobby paints are of very high quality and feature a high amount
of pigment. Coverage is excellent and there is no cost for the thinner
making the actual cost of a paint job quite reasonable. Also there is
no hazzard shipping costs with this paint.
EASY CLEAN UP
Since water is used for cleaning up, one can use all the “thinner/water”
for cleaning up the paint equipment and painting area.
QUICK DRYING
A painted object can be picked up and additional paint applied in less
than 10 minutes. With a heat gun and carefully applying heat, the paint
can be cured sufficiently to sand in less than 1 minute.
SPRAY OR BRUSH
Any common method of applying the paint can be used. An inexpensive
foam rubber brush can be used with good results. Standard high pressure
or low pressure HVLP spray equipment can also be used. Exceptional results
are obtained with the HVLP equipment.
OVER-SPRAY FALLS AS DUST
Over-spray occurs when spraying. Over-spray in many paints will adhere
to the area around the object being painted. This paint over-spray dries
immediately and falls as dust (unless the backdrop area is immediately
next to the object being painted).
The paint can be applied directly to polyester or epoxy parts without
the need for a base primer. It can also be used on many different plastics.
Some flat finish plastics, such as ABS, require a under coat of 3M Artist
Spray Mount adhesive or our epoxy primer. Most shinny plastics and canopies
can be painted directly.
CLEAR DOPE NOT NEEDED ON FABRIC
Clear doping of polyester fabrics commonly used on larger model aircraft
need not be filled or primed with clear dope. The paint is applied directly
onto the raw fabric. A lighter weight finish is the result of using
this paint. Crosslinker required on open fabric surfaces.
FUEL PROOF
NELSON Hobby paint with the addition of the recommended Cross Linker
additive (only 8 drops per ounce of paint) allows the use of 50%
or more nitro fuels. The paint can be used without the Cross Linker,
on solid surfaces, when gasoline or low nitro glow fuel is used.
SANDS EASILY
Can be easily wet sanded with 220 or 320 wet and dry sandpaper.
DOESN’T TURN YELLOW
An ultraviolet inhibitor is part of the paint chemistry. With age, the
colored or clear paint does not have a tendency to turn yellow like
many epoxy paints.
MANY COLORS AVAILABLE INCLUDING MILITARY
FS 595B COLORS
A wide selection of colors that match very closely to popular Mylar/plastic
films are available. Many common military colors are also available.
Custom colors can be provided as well. Gloss and flat clear paint is
also provided.
HAS A GLOSSY FINISH
Paint dries to a good gloss. Perhaps not a wet look, but depending on
the colors, the gloss is highly reflective. Red being a high gloss color
and white a lower gloss color. The application of a clear coat will
provide a wet look gloss if required. Most modelers are satisfied with
the natural gloss. A flat clear for military paint jobs is also available.
ALSO
AVAILABLE IN FLAT COLORS
All
military colors are available in a non gloss or flat finish.
ADVANTAGES OF NELSON
HOBBY
EPOXY PRIMER
SANDS WELL
This primer can be easily wet sanded.
ADHERES TO MOST SURFACES
Adheres excellently to fiberglass parts, aluminum, steel, and wood.
WHITE OR LIGHT GREY IN COLOR
Excellent color base for lighter colors such as red, yellow, and orange.
WATER IS THINNER
Water is used for thinning and clean up.
BRUSH OR SPRAY
Primer can be easily applied with a foam rubber brush or by spraying.
DOESN’T SHRINK
This type of primer doesn't shrink after curing. This means when primer
is applied in several layers over imperfections and then sanded, depressions
or hollow spots will not occur due to long term shrinkage over those
imperfections. A stable smooth, level surface is obtained.
ABOUT
COLORS
The
various NELSON Hobby colors are reproduced as accurately as possible.
However, there are many variables that effect the actual color produced.
This applies to our paints as well as to the various brands of plastic
film covering materials. Be aware of color variances between the film
color on the model and a part painted with our paint. Sometime the various
film colors can be be off a lot between production batches.
The color of a painted surface depends on the actual surface itself
and the final gloss obtained by the paint. A wet look high gloss finish
will more approximate the color of a plastic film finish. Use our gloss
clear to get a film finish. A flat clear is offered for use on military
colors. Gloss and flat clear can be mixed to obtain a different look.
Another variable with a painted color is the color of the base or initial
color. Yellow, orange, and red type colors painted over white paint
look normal in color. However, if any of these colors are painted over
a darker color, then the apparent final color will be of a different
shade. The yellow, orange, and red colors are semi-transparent due to
the make up of the pigments used. In today’s time, our government
does not allow lead in paint pigments. In the past the red, yellow,
and orange type colors used lead in the pigments to produce a very solid
dense color.
Matching colors to a color photograph lead to accuracy problems. The
colors of a photo have many variables such as the time of day photo
was taken, distance of the camera from the aircraft, the color of the
surface the aircraft is sitting on, the type of film used, and many
variables in the processing of the film.
Many times in magazine photos you can find a series of photos about
a particular aircraft and find that the colors are different in many
of the photos.
World War I colors are difficult. There were no colored photographs
at the time. The reference colors are from artists paintings and perhaps
scraps of the original aircraft. Over many years these colors have faded.
It is not practical for us to print all of our standard colors. Shown
is just a representative of what is offered.
ORDERING INFORMATION
NELSON Hobby Paint is offered in over 175 standard colors. These colors
are stock items for us. Standard colors are available in 1/2 pint and
pint containers.
CUSTOM COLORS
Custom colors are available. These are colors that we do not stock or
have mixing information available. These colors include any Federal
Standard colors (FS) that are not listed in our selection of USA Military
FS colors and any other German, British, and Japanese colors not listed.
We
can offer Randolph Products and Stitts aircraft paint colors. These
colors considered custom colors as we do not stock these colors. Only
available in pints at $24.95 ea. We have color charts from these two
companies, however there may be discontinued or new colors that we do
not have on file.
Custom colors can be made from customer supplied photos or colored three
view drawings.
We have a commercial color chart (item # P100 @ $5.00) that has 190
colors. This is not an aircraft type color chart. Just commerical colors.
But many of the colors shown are the same very similar to aircraft and
film colors. Any of these colors are considered Custom colors.
Custom colors are only available in pints at $24.95.
